Dixie Bait Company
Daytona Beach, Florida

The Dixie Bait Company was a small operation that was in business for only a couple of years in the late 1930's.

Though the box in the picture says Orange City, the company was actually located in Daytona Beach, Florida. Boxes have been found with the names of both cities. The 1937 Orlando City Directory showed Dixie Bait Company in Daytona Beach. It also showed a young man by the name of John Marsh as an employee of the company. Years later Johnny Marsh would go on to start his own lure making company.

One of the principals of the Dixie Bait Company was Richard Porter. Several years after Dixie Bait went out of business, he would go on to form the Porter Bait Company, which became one of the largest lure makers in Florida.

Dixie Bait Company made darter lures in some very pretty paint patterns. Some might disagree about whether these were made by Dixie or Porter, but most would agree that it does not really matter.

Dixie Bait Company made shiners in a variety of shapes and color patterns. The
rigging on these lures was quite sturdy, as they were designed to catch big fish.
